FC Porto, having narrowly lost at home to Leicester City in their previous group stage game, came from behind to beat Club Brugge. Jelle Vossen gave the home side an eleventh minute lead which they held until the sixty-eighth minute when FC Porto left-back Miguel Layún fired home from just inside the box.
This was the Mexican international’s first goal for his new club since joining from Watford in the summer.
Just as a draw was looking the likely result, Jesús Manuel Corona was tripped by Brugge’s Claudemir and up stepped 20-year-old André Silva to smash home the winning penalty.
With Leicester having won all three games, it looks like a battle between FC Koebenhavn and FC Porto for the second qualifying spot. Both teams have four points but the Danish side have a superior goal difference.
FC Porto next entertain Club Brugge at the Dragon Stadium on 2 November. Sporting Lisbon have a lot of work to do if they are to qualify for the knock-out stages after losing 2-1 to Borussia Dortmund at the Alvalade.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Julian Weigl gave the German side a 2-0 lead at the interval with Bruno Cesar pulling a goal back for Sporting midway through the second period. Real Madrid beat Legia Warszawa 5-1 at the Bernabau without Cristiano Ronaldo being on the score sheet!
Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid top the group with seven points whilst Sporting languish in third place on three points.
Sporting now face a tough trip to Borussia Dortmund on 2 November before entertaining Real Madrid in Lisbon later in the month.
