Portugal saw 142 people per million die on its roads last year, according to the figure.

The highest incidence rate for road fatalities was seen in the region of Severozapaden, Bulgaria, where 153 per million died, followed by Alentejo and Luxembourg (138).

In Portugal, Lisbon metropolitan area saw the lowest incidence of road deaths (30 per million) followed by the north (39), and the Azores (45).

The lowest incidence rate for road fatalities in 2016 was recorded in the Austrian capital city region of Wien (10 deaths per million inhabitants), according to the report.
