The Lisbon neighbourhood of Alfama won the Santo António popular marches parade on Monday night, with a colourful procession inspired by this year’s theme, the Atlantic Ocean.

Bairro Alto came in second and the Madragoa neighbourhood in third. More than 20 neighbourhoods took part in the stunning convoy, which this year had the theme ‘Atlantic – A Sea of Meetings’ as inspiration.
All neighbourhoods have to create music and lyrics for their parades, as well as choreography, decorations and outfits allusive to the set theme.
Also on Monday, 16 couples got married in the traditional Santo António weddings, a mass celebration organised by the council to provide nuptials to the city’s cash-strapped couples.
The Santo António celebrations are one of Lisbon’s most highly-anticipated festivities and see the entire city explode into song and dance in homage to its patron saint, Saint Anthony.
Every public garden and square is trussed up with decorations, and equipped with stalls selling grilled sardines and sangria and a stage for musical performers, to commemorate the traditional celebrations.
It most sought-after neighbourhoods at the centre of the celebrations, Alfama, Bairro Alto and Bica, are flooded at night when the festivities come to life.
The popular marches parade brings Lisbon’s Santo António festivities to a head, with Tuesday, perhaps fittingly after a week of merriment, being a local public holiday.
