According to latest figures released by the Algarve Tourism Association (ATA), the number of rounds played during the first half of the year was just under 700,000.
This represents double digit growth (14.9 percent) compared to last year, which currently holds the record, with 1.2 million rounds played.
The region’s 40 golf courses continued to report strong numbers over the usually quiet summer months, with expectations that this coming autumn will see continued growth in the sport which is one of the region’s biggest weapons against seasonality.
ATA Executive Director Dora Coelho said this growth was the result of “the strong promotional strategy we have developed alongside the private sector of golf tourism.”
The most frequent visitors to Algarve golf courses remain the United Kingdom, Germany and Ireland, with golfers from the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and France also seeing strong growth in recent years.
