Around 15,000 passengers now stranded by high winds in Madeira

A dozen or so flights did manage to land and leave the island earlier Monay after a slight drop in the wind opened a short window of opportunity.

This allowed around 1,000 passengers to fly to and from the island but the majority is still retained.

The strong winds are expected to last at least until Tuesday.
