Austerity not to blame for fire or theft

by TPN/ Lusa, in Business · 13-07-2017 14:07:00 · 0 Comments

Portugal’s secretary of state of parliamentary affairs said on Wednesday that there is no evidence that austerity was responsible for the fire tragedy in Pedrógão Grande that left 64 people dead, or the weapons theft from Tancos barracks, in an interview with radio station TSF and newspaper Diário de Notícias.

State Secretary, Pedro Nuno Santos, said there was no indication whatsoever that the events had been caused by any past or present austerity measures, though he acknowledged that this did not mean that there is not a general need to increase investment in public services.
Portuguese parliament was, on Wednesday, due to debate the state of the nation, less than a month after the deadly forest fire in Pedrógão Grande and just two weeks after heavy weapons were found to have gone missing from the Tancos arsenal, which led to five army commanders being temporarily removed from office. Another topic that was expected to come up at the debate was the resignations of three secretaries of state on Monday, after they were all charged by the public prosecutor’s office following an investigation into accepting trips to watch the Euro2016 football championship, offered by oil company Galp.
