He also urged the European Union (EU) to move forward with the negotiations on the future economic situation.
“It is vital for both sides to reach an agreement, to protect the Europeans citizens’ rights and privileges and I am certain we will reach one. This is the message I have for our friends and partners in the EU and here in Lisbon,” Boris Johnson said, after having met with the Portuguese Foreign Minister, Augusto Santos.
Mr Johnson, who led the Brexit campaign in the referendum that led to the UK’s departure from the EU, said that the 400,000 Portuguese residents in the United Kingdom contribute to the country’s life, culture and economy. He also acknowledged the three million British tourists that visit Portugal every year.
Mr Santos pointed out that there are aspects to be considered regarding the negotiations of the Portuguese citizens’ rights in the UK, which could be resolved by December.
