The board of directors of CaixaBank, which controls the Portuguese bank BPI, decided on Friday at an extraordinary meeting to move its head office from Barcelona to Valência, because of the possibility of a unilateral declaration of independence by Catalonia.

The Catalan bank took the measure after the Spanish cabinet approved a law today that makes it quicker and easier for companies that want to move their head offices out of Catalonia to other parts of the country.

Until now, companies who wanted to move their head offices had to call a shareholder meeting.

CaixaBank has followed the decision by Banco Sabadell, which said on Thursday it was transferring its head offices to Alicante, given the uncertainty in Catalonia.
