For the past two weeks the British Army Rugby squad has been using the superb facilities for their annual training camp before their upcoming inter-services games against the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force.
Last weekend GDS Cascais (Lisbon coast) were the opposition in a very one-sided game which saw the British Army run out winners 83-0. The well drilled army squad opened the scoring after just two minutes and continued to score tries at will.
The half-time score was 52-0 with the Portuguese side having a brief spell of pressure midway through the second-half but failing to penetrate a rock solid Army defence. Try scorers for the Army were Balekinasiga (3), Leatham (3), Llewellyn, O’Reilly (2), Koroiyadi, Bulumakau and Nakka.
Army Rugby Union secretary Chris Fowke said, “We’ve had useful wins against Cambridge University and Oxford University but we will need to be at our best to overcome the Navy and the RAF, so this fortnight in the wonderful Algarve has helped to sharpen our reactions. The players have worked hard and the facilities here are superb which is why we come back year-after-year.”
