Cancer cases increase 3-4% a year, deaths remain stable

The incidence of cancer in Portugal has been rising 3% to 4% a year and there were 50,000 new cases in 2017, but mortality numbers have remained almost unaltered, oncologist Miguel Barbosa said.

He said that the increase in cases that did not transform into more deaths was thanks to better care, but most cancer units were working at their limits.

 

The doctor, who is one of the organisers of the Spring Cancer Meeting, which is being held in Évora between Thursday and Saturday, told Lusa News Agency that these numbers show there are “more and more new cases” as the population ages, but the services are “treating the patients better”.
