A statement issued by the Portuguese Immigration Office SEF revealed that the cocaine was found in shampoo containers in the couple’s luggage.
In its statement, published on Monday, SEF said it had “intercepted two passengers suspected of carrying drugs, who had arrived on a flight from the UK”.
The office explained that after liaising with Customs they “confirmed the existence of narcotic products, having detected cocaine hidden in shampoo bottles in the luggage of one of the passengers.”
SEF explained that a woman, aged 29 and a man aged 32, were arrested on Sunday evening and placed in the custody of PJ Police in Faro.
The British pair was expected to be heard at Faro Court late on Tuesday as it was shut due to the Monday bank holiday.
The suspects’ names were not released, but according to reports in the Mirror, the couple was arrested after authorities in Portugal received a tip-off from their British counterparts.
The couple is said to have landed at Faro on a flight from East Midlands.
In an update published on Tuesday, the Mirror reported that the couple had been released without charge.
The British Embassy in Lisbon said it has “not been approached about this case reported in the media.”
However, in an email sent to The Portugal News on Wednesday, Portugal’s Attorney General’s Office confirmed “the existence of an inquiry [which is] to run under the office of the prosecutor of the Faro District and is under investigation.”
