Some people were ordered to leave their homes while others were taken away by relatives.

The flames were swiftly doused but local civil defence officials were by early afternoon still assessing the situation, including the structural damage to buildings, to determine who can return and when.

The municipal director for civil defence, Emília Castela, described the operation as "very complex" and said it would take most of the day, given the quantity of old buildings involved.

Local services were meanwhile continuing to clear up the area, which is full of shards of glass, furniture that was sent flying by the explosion, and the remains of three cars that were set on fire.

Traffic has been blocked off completely in the street where the explosion took place, in a shop on the ground floor of a building.

The incident left two people seriously injured and two slightly injured, according to fire service commanders, who suspect that it was a gas explosion.
