On Friday the Portuguese parliament debated the report from the Independent Technical Commission (ITC) on the fires that began on 17 June and lasted for two weeks.

The fires extended to neighbouring municipalities, causing extensive damage to homes and companies in Castanheira de Pera, Figueiró dos Vinhos, Góis, Pampilhosa da Serra, Sertã and Penela.

Most of the victims were killed in an attempt to escape the blaze on national road 236, but this report raised the death toll to 65, including a woman who was run over as she feld the fire.
