Research carried out by the Institute for the Planning and Development of Tourism to explore the intentions of Portuguese holidaymakers, found that just over half of those involved in the survey – or 52 percent – said they would be taking a holiday this summer.
Of those more than half (53 percent) said they intend to travel outside of their area of residence for a break, although fewer people chose that option than last year, when 67 percent of holidaymakers went on a trip.
The remaining 47 percent of the respondents said they would be staying at home, with the main reasons given for staying put being financial, work and retirement.
The majority of those who said they would be venturing beyond their immediate surroundings opted to stay-cation and visit the Algarve, followed by the centre and the north of Portugal.
Most of those said they would be renting a property for their holiday, staying with friends, or staying in a four or five-star hotel.
The findings of the study, which were released on Monday this week, were based on answers given in 500 telephone surveys carried out between 2 and 29 May.
