According to the Portuguese Navy, the man’s lifeless body was retrieved from the ocean an hour after the incident was reported. He was reportedly washed out to sea after a freak wave hit his fishing spot.
It is believed the man, who was aged 63 and from Portimão, was not wearing a life-vest which the national coastguard stressed should be worn at all times by fishermen in order to reduce the risks associated with falling from cliffs along Portugal’s south-western coastline.
