The page, created by local residents who have had enough of the loud and sometimes lewd behaviour on the strip, has now been ‘liked’ over 3,000 times.
It was set up to demand an end be put to the noise, scraps, damage and drunken scenes that occur with increasing frequency during summer at the popular night spot which have made national headlines in recent weeks.
“We have always got along with [Oura’s] nightlife and the tourism that comes with it, but everything has a limit! Year-on-year and increasingly the excesses of the famous strip do not stop...” the page’s mission statement reads.
Another comment on the community page elaborates: “Just so there are no misunderstandings (…) no one here wants to put an end to anyone’s business. But let’s be honest. What kind of money does this type of tourism bring? Is this the kind of tourist who will go to a restaurant and eat a nice meal? Who will go to a shop and buy a souvenir? Who will go to the beach and rent a parasol and beds?”
Speaking to newspaper Correio da Manhã local residents said they struggle to sleep at night because of the noise and complained of a lack of intervention from authorities.
The local fire-brigade also told the newspaper that it receives “dozens” of call-outs every day to assist drunken tourists.
Most recently, locals were left enraged after six men, who were part of a group of 11 male holidaymakers, sat naked on an esplanade on the strip in broad daylight.
One furious witness claims to have seen one of the men inappropriately touching himself in full view of the public.
The Portugal News asked Albufeira council for comment but none had been received at the time of going to press.
