According to an agreement that will be signed later today between the government and the baking industry, the amount of salt found in bread will be reduced from 1.4 grams per 100 grams of bread to 1.3 grams.

This figure will continue to be cut until it reaches 1 gram by 2021.

Portuguese currently consume 7.3 grams of salt per day, which well above the daily recommendation of five grams.
