The discussion was due to take place in a private meeting with the government. The city council said the regulation is due to the “increase in tourism and the growing scarcity of housing supply, which has particularly been seen in the city of Lisbon, with the consequent steep rise of rents and precariousness in housing.”
It highlights that it is “necessary to implement a set of public policies aimed at defending the stock of permanent housing, to limit the installation of new tourist establishments in neighbourhoods where their presence has an excessive weight compared with the total residence available and protect the gentrification neighbourhoods, favouring the affordable lease and defending the trade.”
On 9 November, the suspension of new registrations of local accommodation establishments in some areas of the city came into force, including areas such as Bairro Alto, Madragoa, Castelo, Alfama and Mouraria.
