The ‘Lisbon is Beautiful’ volunteer programme falls under the area of Urban Hygiene and was officially presented to the public on Wednesday this week.
The programme is part of activities for the Lisbon 2015 – European Volunteering Capital and aims to involve Lisbon citizens in keeping their surrounding areas spruced up.
‘Lisbon is Beautiful’ will be rolled out in collaboration with local parishes and is the result of a challenge launched by a citizen during a decentralised Lisbon Council meeting in Lumiar.
It is for that reason that the programme was launched in Lumiar on Wednesday.
The official opening ceremony of the European Volunteering Capital (CEV) 2015 took place in Lisbon earlier this month, on 5 March.
Speaking at the ceremony, the CEV President, Eva Hambach said: “The fact that Lisbon has been chosen as European Volunteering Capital 2015 means that the City has invested in volunteering and that it has proven to have fulfilled different recommendations from P.A.V.E. (The Policy Agenda for Volunteering in Europe) to a high and effective standard.
“2015 has to be [for Lisbon] a time for celebration, and a time for promotion. But also a time to keep on working to ensure a volunteer-friendly climate not only in Lisbon, but across Portugal, and serving as an outstanding example for other cities more widely in Europe as well.”
