Ty Tooze, 26, set off on Monday (10 October) to run the almost 700 kilometres from north to south Portugal for charity.
Deeming it the “challenge of a lifetime”, Ty expects the run to take 10 days, and will see the active adventurer tackle varying terrain and temperatures. The Suffolk native will be raising funds for the Shark Trust and the World Land Trust charities, both of which undertake vital conservation work which he is passionate about.
Speaking to The Portugal News he explained: “Growing up in the town of Halesworth, Suffolk, the World Land Trust was a local charity organisation I found myself interested in straight away. Working within conservation from a young age developed this passion for wildlife but more specifically marine wildlife, this is why I have also chosen the Shark Trust to donate the proceeds of my run to.”
The Shark Trust protects marine species and works to create positive perception change, and the World Land Trust works to save and protect biologically important and threatened habitats.
Wildlife and conservation enthusiast Ty added: “I’ve always been passionate about the natural world. I grew up spending all my spare time outdoors and wildlife has always been an important part of my life. I’m especially passionate about marine life, and different landscapes which are fascinating.
“I spend my free time exploring different places off the beaten track; it’s incredible to discover just how many animals we share our planet with and the different places they call home, and really sad to think how many of these are threatened. I really wanted to give something back so decided to combine my love for adventure and wildlife and push myself to do something physically challenging to help two charities I really care about.”
Regarding his choice of Portugal as the backdrop for the challenge, he elaborated: “This is a personal exploration for me as I have never visited Portugal before. It has been described as extremely beautiful and I’m positive that it will not disappoint. The route is very linear and I am able to run from North to South whilst hugging the stunning coast.”
On a personal note, he added: “I am looking forward to visiting the appealing city of Lisbon and discovering its history whilst experiencing a true Portuguese pastel de nata. The initiation well of Sintra and the impressive waves of Nazaré are also must-sees for me.”
Ty has spent most of this past summer training and will be joined on the gruelling run by a friend.
“I’ll be starting in the north and heading down the coast, so the further I get into the run the hotter it will get which could be challenging. I’m lucky to have a friend coming with me to make sure I’m on track to make it to the end point.
“I’m so excited to help the Shark Trust and World Land Trust; if I’m having a tough time I’ll think of them and the reason behind the challenge. That’s what will keep me going towards the finish line.”
