Palmeiras beach in Santa Cruz on the East of the Island was closed off for around an hour following the sighting of the two predators just metres from the coast.
The alarm was raised at around 4.45pm and a red flag was hoisted to warn bathers not to go in the sea. The green flag was hoisted around an hour later.
