Organised by the Algarve Cancer Association AOA, the yearly event again attracted some 5,000 participants, among them professional athletes and amateur supporters, who could choose from a 21km half marathon, a 10km mini-marathon, and an eight-kilometre walking route.
Pink t-shirts flooded Portimão’s riverfront early on Sunday morning, with people flocking from far and wide to take part in what is one of the Algarve’s biggest yearly events.
A spokesperson for the association told The Portugal News provisional figures indicate that funds raised through pre-enrolments were at around €22,000 before the day of the event, though that number is still expected to swell significantly with donations, enrolment fees on the day, sponsorship and other contributions still coming in and being tallied up.
The funds will be put towards the Association’s two main flagship projects; the Casa Flor das Dunas ‘home-from-home’, for long-distance patients undergoing cancer treatments in Faro, and a new, state of the art mobile unit for breast cancer screening.
“The unit will renovate mobile screening, offering mammograms with the latest technology, which gives better imagery with less radiation”, the spokesperson explained.
The Mamamaratona is organised in partnership with Portimão council and the Algarve Athletics Association, and is already planned for 15 October 2017.
