The centre-right backed candidate, who formerly led the Social Democratic Party, will tke office on 9 March.

The second-placed candidate was Sampaio de Novoa, who despite receiving the suport from the ruling Socialist Party, only claimed 22 percent of the vote.

He was followed by Left Bloc candidate Marisa Matias.
