Mobile operators made €50m off ‘illegal’ price hikes

in Business · 03-08-2017 14:32:00 · 0 Comments

A consumer watchdog association estimates that mobile operators made an additional 50 million euros off clients following a price increase which has been deemed illegal.

According to regulator Anacom, the increase failed to comply with existing legislation requiring operators to inform clients of contractual changes, which include price hikes.
Consumer association Deco has called for clients to be reimbursed for amounts which were reportedly overcharged since the law’s introduction a year ago.
This comes after the country’s largest operator came under fire for seeking 139 euros from the next of kin of a client who died in the recent Pedrógão Grande fires.
The father of one of the victims notified MEO that his son had died in the fires, but was still sent a bill three weeks later demanding he pay the amount for not seeing out the contract.
But following a public outcry, MEO, which had initially declined to comment, said the letter requesting payment was sent out automatically and that the matter had “since been resolved.”
