Working with the Portuguese PJ police, Spanish authorities detained 12 members of a Spanish-Albanian organisation in the Pontevedra region, which borders with Portugal, in Barcelona and in Galicia.
Around €350,000 in cash and seven luxury vehicles were seized as part of the investigation, which was launched in July.
A statement from the Spanish police explained that the vehicle in which the drugs were found, a Porsche Cayenne, was discovered in the city of Tui, on the border with Portugal, near a hotel where a couple were due to collect the drugs.
The heroin was bought in Amsterdam and concealed inside packages that were cleverly stashed inside the body of the 4x4.
Seven other members of the network were detained in Barcelona, and a further two people responsible for distributing the heroin were arrested in Galicia, the police said.
The European Observatory for Drugs and Addictions and the European police agency Europol have estimated the EU’s heroin market at around €6.8 billion a year and said it has seen a growth in supply since 2013, with arrests and seizures in some countries setting new records.
