The petition on Tuesday had already reached 9,800 signatures, according to the movement which was set up in January to have fox hunting in Portugal abolished.
It was created by five members who met on the internet through their shared environmental concerns and anger at the fox hunts organised throughout the country.
The movement claims there are a lack of scientific baseis to support and prove the alleged excess of foxes, arguing there are no general studies or censuses on foxes in Portugal, and deem their hunting a “cruel and barbaric practice” that contradicts the efforts of education on environmental issues.
According to the group, this practice has seen the death of more than 142,000 foxes between 2005 and 2015 and it hopes to see the petition taken to plenary in parliament.
