McGregor, known for starring in movies such as ‘Moulin Rouge’ and ‘Trainspotting’, was holidaying in the northern Portuguese city at the end of last month.

During his stay he twice popped into the Porto Guitarra music shop, which sells traditional Portuguese guitars.

After trying out a number of the instruments – Porto Guitarra owner Agostinho Rodrigues affirms the star can in fact play the guitar and understands music – 44-year-old McGregor opted to buy a traditional Cavaquinho to take home as a souvenir.

Days later the actor returned to buy another traditional Portuguese guitar.

Named the Eiffel, the design of the Portuguese guitar in question was created in homage to the city by designer and musician Jorge Almeida and was inspired by Oporto’s D. Luís I bridge.

Agostinho Rodrigues said the ‘The Impossible’ star had been “delighted with our store and with the sound of our instruments.”

His wife Maria Cristina told The Portugal News: “As big fans of the actor, we loved his visit and he promised to visit us when he returned to Oporto.”
