Doctors at the Red Cross Hospital said Soares, who turned 92 last week, is under constant medical surveillance.
Soares was admitted to hospital early yesterday morning in a critical condition with doctors admitting little progress has been in made to his health since.
Mário Soares spent a number of years in exile during Portugal’s dictatorship, before returning to lead the Socialist Party shortly after the 1974 revolution.
