October 5 celebrates the day Portugal’s Republic was implemented.

The holiday was one of several scrapped back in 2012 as part of the Troika’s bailout measures, but was reinstated last year.

With temperatures set to rise today for the weekend, expectations are that many people off work will head for the beach.

But authorities have warned beachgoers to take extra care as many of the country’s beaches are no longer manned with lifeguards as official beach season is now over.
