by TPN/ Lusa, in Business · 11-05-2017 15:15:00 · 0 Comments

More than 612,000 Portuguese workers were paid the minimum wage in 2016, an increase of about 100,000 compared with the year before, the government said in a new report.

In relative terms, this means that about 20.6 percent of workers were paid the minimum last year.
Looking at the workers on the minimum wage who worked for others, the report said that “these workers are usually with low qualifications (not having completed high school) and are mainly women and youths employed in micro and small companies.
Compared with other countries, “Portugal is in the intermediate group of European countries regarding the increases in the minimum wage over the last decade, both in nominal and real terms,” the report added.
The minimum wage is currently €530 paid 14 times a year.
