A statement from the General Staff of the Armed Forces said a total of 14,505 personnel have been involved in operations between January and October, backed up by 3,388 vehicles, which covered close to 453,000 kilometres of terrain, 305 track machines and several aircraft.
Among the various operations that armed forces personnel were sent to help out with were the Madeira fires, which required the intervention of 145 soldiers and 97 vehicles, as well as flying firefighters from Lisbon to Funchal.
Meanwhile, patrolling and surveying areas of scrubland and forests on the mainland during the peak fire season, between 1 July and 15 October, required the support of over 3,400 soldiers and 1,471 vehicles, covering 188,000 kilometres.
Soldiers also helped refuel 82 aircraft that were sent to help out during forest fires on the mainland.
Armed Forces personnel further carried out 29 medical air evacuations as well as helping build a military bridge in Maiorca, Figueira da Foz, which was open to traffic for around one month, and provided assistance on request on several occasions to the Azores and Madeira.
