No futher details of the planned visit were released by the prime minister's office, which made the announcement.

Albuquerque told journalists last week that he had issued the invitation to Passos Coelho, after he was received at the latter's official residence in Lisbon. He said he intended "to resume the meetings between the two governments at the highest level, every six months", with officials from various government departments in attendance.

Since he became prime minister in June 2011, Passos Coelho has only visited Madeira once in that capacity, last November, but only in order to take part in a business ceremony. At the time, Alberto João Jardim, the long-time regional premier, was still in power.
Passos Coelho has several times made visits as leader of the Social Democratic Party, whose Madeira section Jardim led for four decades.

Albuquerque was last year elected to replace Jardim as party leader and last month secured a renewed majority in the regional assembly in legislative elections there.
