Portugal has nothing to learn from US on terrorism - Home Minister

"We must always be prepared for all risks, but recent international assessments have ranked Portugal as the fourth safest country in the world. It is at this level that we want to be, in this matter we have nothing to learn from the US," said Eduardo Cabrita, on the sidelines of a visit to the GNR police station of Vila Verde, in the northern district of Braga.

According to Portuguese weekly Sol, the US embassy in Lisbon has issued warnings to Americans residing in the country and to those who travel to Portugal to be watchful for any attacks.

Asked about the security of the most touristy areas of the country at this time of year, the minister gave a message focused on safety.

"We are going to do what we usually do at this time of year. The Algarve and the country will be safe all year round, but in this period resources are upped in all areas, including the GNR and the PSP [police forces], which will guarantee a safer Algarve," he said.
