According to figures published by the National Statistics Institute (INE), on 31 December of last year, the resident population in Portugal was estimated at 10,309,573 people, 31,757 fewer compared to 2015.

This translates into a negative growth rate of 0.31% and reflects a combination of deaths and births as well as migratory balances.

In the last seven years, the population of Portugal has fallen overall by 264,000, INE said.
