The GNR said in a communiqué that the migrants were discovered by officers posted to the island of Samos in Greece using night-vision equipment as part of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency mission (Frontex).

The Portuguese police force has 13 officers and a boat stationed on Samos who ensure maritime surveillance operations.

The officers’ mission is to prevent and detect crimes connected with illegal immigration and human trafficking.
