The Scots suffered a further blow following their 6-0 loss in Utrecht when the prolific Jane Ross was ruled out of Sunday's encounter.

The loss of the Manchester City forward is the latest blow to hit Signeul's preparations after Arsenal midfielder Kim Little, Hibernian striker Lizzie Arnot and Ross's City team-mate, Jen Beattie, failed to make the squad because of injury.

But Signeul has vowed that the Scots will come out fighting in Rotterdam.

Quoted on the UEFA website, Signeul told a media conference: "We always knew England was going to be a very difficult opening match but we've kept a great atmosphere and cohesion in the team. I'm so proud we're such a great team together.

"We have had so many injuries and to still be such a strong team is wonderful. We know we can go out and win the game.

"We have a good chance in every area to be able to do damage. We had seven corners against England - we are going to change the outcome of our set-pieces and be more efficient."

Midfielder Jo Love vowed to make amends for their opening disappointment against a side Scotland have beaten three times in their previous six meetings.

The Glasgow City player said: "We're going to try and right some wrongs from the first match and show we're a really good team, and perform better than versus England. We're a clinical team.

"It's a shame Jane Ross isn't here but we're focused on putting in a performance and doing our country proud.

"Portugal always give us a difficult game. They're very tactical and technical. We've done a lot of work on them.

"Our memories from this stadium aren't great - we lost a play-off to Holland here, but we're going to put that right."
