Often referred to as the Carnation Revolution, on 25 April 1974 Portugal saw a civilian-backed military coup oust the
totalitarian Estado Novo regime with almost no casualties to report.

Every year on 25 April, Portugal celebrates the date to commemorate the massive social and political changes that the revolution brought about.

While last year saw major events being organised to celebrate the landmark 40th anniversary, this year will also see its fair share of commemorations.

Most town halls and parishes across Portugal will be hoisting flags to the national anthem on Saturday to mark the occasion, with commemorative events ranging from an ‘Ethnographic Parade’ in Vila de Lousada (Oporto, northern Portugal) to charitable sport events in Aguiar (Alentejo) and a series of theatrical and cultural events in the Algarve, which also ran throughout last week.
