Victims will receive €80,000 per every death caused by the fires, and €70,000 for suffering, to a total of €31 million.
Authorities said 112 people died in the two massive fires last year; Justice Ombudsman Maria Lúcia Amaral said 114 claims have been made, regarding direct and indirect family members who were affected.
The biggest payment, €300,000, is being made to an individual whose entire family was wiped out in the inferno.
The amounts being attributed for the deaths are above the average compensation paid in Portugal, because “what happened was unique, because of the extreme violence,” the Ombudsman said.
