Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa met the president of the USA in the early afternoon (evening in Portugal) and they spoke to the press in the Oval Office for 15 minutes before having a private conversation followed by a wider bilateral meeting.
The Portuguese president said afterwards that the “meeting met its objectives” which meant a “positive and even warm recognition of a 242-year-old relationship” and of a “powerful (Portuguese descendent) community” and important bilateral relationships in the fields of defence and energy.
In turn, Donald Trump sent the following message on Twitter at the end of the day: “Today, it was my great honor to welcome President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal to the @WhiteHouse!”
The Portuguese president told reporters regarding immigration that Portugal stands with the European Union in that there are few points in common with the United States.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also seemed to disagree with Trump on the need for strong borders and later confirmed that this was one of the very divergent positions expressed at the meeting.
