The most common crimes culminating in arrests were drink-driving, drug-trafficking and driving without a licence.
Between 15 June and 15 July, the first phase of Operation Safe Summer, 398 people were arrested for drink-driving, 161 for drug-trafficking and 145 for driving without a licence.
A further 400 arrests were made in compliance with warrants, 157 for theft, and 25 for being in possession of an illegal weapon.
The operation is ongoing until 15 September and sees heightened police security in popular summer destinations, such as beaches, tourist resorts, and on the main roads.
Meanwhile, the GNR police registered 694 accidents on Portugal’s roads during the second phase of ‘Operation Hermes’.
The annual operation aims to ensure the country’s roads are kept safe during the busy summer months.
During the second phase of Operation Hermes, in place from Friday, 14 July, to Sunday, 16 July, that police force also registered two deaths and 15 serious injuries caused by accidents on the roads.
