’Border Patrol: Self-portrait with Lila, Reflection and Ana’ is a work in pastel on paper, in which, apart from Lila Nunes, the model the Portuguese artist uses most, and Ana, another favourite, Paula Rego herself, appears.
Lila is sitting on a wooden chair looking at her reflection in a small mirror that Ana holds in front of her face, but instead of showing Lila’s face, it shows the artist’s.
With an opening price of between £200,000 and £250,000 (€260,000 and €325,000), the painting is going under the hammer on 12 February at Christie’s on the second day of an auction of contemporary and post-war art that includes works by Yves Klein, Peter Doig, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Yves Klein, Gerhard Richter, Lucio Fontana and Jean Dubuffet, among others.
