The incident happened at around 3am on Monday morning along the Albufeira strip. Local business owners said some of the estimated 1,000 tourists believed to have travelled to Portugal for a festival had acted 'disgracefully' during their stay in the resort.
But some of the holidaymakers accused the police of overreacting.
The tourists formed part of a group called Invasion Portugal, though organisers have distanced themselves from the trouble and said they do not condone the behaviour displayed.
While it is understood the police may have possibly over reacted this is a unfortunate situation which is quite frankly embarrassing to be linked to in terms of all individuals being British. It is however noted that possibly as many as 50% are Irish as well as English but regardless of the cause Alchol indeed plays a big part which hopefully will be fully reviewed to see if all people involved are able to learn any lessons prior to the huge planned expansion of the countries tourist industry. For years I have made visits to this part of town and for the first time ever this year I suddenly and sadly noted that there has been quite a large decline in the area in terms of visitors and drunkenness that is starting to affect the area. No doubt something the police noted and who are actively engaging with authorities behind the scene to prevent this taking away the towns indentity forever.

Congratulations to the GNR. They did the right thing.

I have had some good times in the strip and fell sorry for the businesses there.
I hope they throw the book at the culprits.

Having been here several times and my family living near here I was appalled at the behaviour of some of the brits here last week. So appalled I was ashamed to admit I was a British citizen. This country is amazing and doesn't deserve these idiots spoiling it for others !!!

As a Brit these reports and pictures are horrifyingly the norm, for certain folk holidays mean drinking to excess then losing all control of bodies and mouths. In the UK media the consensus is once more an idle, stupid minority ruining things for everyone trying to enjoy their work or leisure; the greater majority of the British public are seemingly in full support of the actions and endeavour of the GNR and PSP.
