Latest figures by the ANSR road safety association show that fatalities in traffic accidents have risen by 50 in relation to 2016.
After more than a decade of drops in road deaths, the number of people who lost their lives up until last Thursday has climbed to 438, with Porto and Setúbal recording the biggest increases.
The number of deaths recorded by officials in Lisbon, however dropped from 49 to 46, while the Algarve has also seen one fewer person die on the region’s roads between 1 January and 15 November in 2017 than it did over the same period last year.
The ANSR also found the total number of serious and light injuries caused in collisions were also up on 2016.
Following these latest figures, the government has said it will soon be launching a large, wide-reaching campaign especially targeting motorbike riders.
