The news of Lopetegui was confirmed in a brief statement issued on Thursday by the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

The 49-year old manager takes over from Vicente del Bosque, who led the national team to victory at the 2010 World Cup and at the European Championships in 2012.

The Basque manager, had previously won the European title with the Spanish under-21s and won two more championships with the under 19s.

Lopetegui's stint in Porto ended after 18 months ended without any silverware at the trophy-hungry club.
