São João Chinese lanterns banned

The traditional Chinese lanterns that are normally launched during the São João celebrations in Porto have this year been banned.

Police have said there will be zero tolerance for anyone caught launching the balloons and hefty fines of up to five thousand euros per person will be issued for offenders.

This comes amid forest fire warnings for most of the country due to the hot weather.

While we lived in Porto we were astounded that these lanterns, as beautiful as they are, were allowed to be launched during summer. Here, in western NSW, it is illegal to do anything like that between October and April because of the potential to start bushfires. We have been deeply saddened by what we have read and been told about the fires in Portugal and our prayers are with the families suffering loss and with the bombeiros who do a magnificent job.
