Social media was this (Wednesday) afternoon flooded with accounts of the fire again being active in the Pinheiro e Garrado area.

Tuesday night was a sleepless night for many Silves residents as the front that had spread from Monchique to Silves came within close proximity of a number of houses and agricultural plots.

The fire was this morning reportedly “brought under control with the help of two kamov helicopters”, SIC Notícias reported, but had flared up again by lunchtime, fuelled by strong wind and rising temperatures, which could make it difficult to fight any re-occurring flames.

Panic was rife on Tuesday as local residents in that area dashed to evacuate properties and animals, including horses from a local riding school.
Firefighters were expected to remain on site throughout the day today (Wednesday) to avoid possible flare-ups, which have apparently already occured, and aircraft remained overhead.
Yesterday areas of Silves including Falacho and Pinheiro e Garrado were evacuated by authorities.
