The Vale de Moura solar farm will cover an area of 55 hectares, a few kilometres from the town. It is being built by Hyperion Renewables, which has established a ‘Power Purchase Agreement’ with Swiss energy company Axpo.
The project is expected to have a total capacity of 28.8 megawatts (MW) and an annual output of more than 52 gigawatt hours a year, which is equivalent to the power consumed by almost 10,000 homes.
The developers said it was the first solar farm in the entire Iberian Peninsula not to receive any government subsidies.
