The teen, who according to newspaper Correio da Manhã is from the Lisbon area, fell down the cliff while “playing around” with friends on the night out.
The accident happened during the early hours of Monday morning, at around 3am, in the vicinity of the Outro bar; the same spot where a number of similar accident have happened in recent times.
A source told Correio da Manhã “the girl was with friends, and then all of a sudden she lost her balance and fell from the wall on the cliff, from a height of over six metres.”
Having suffered extensive cuts and bruising and complaining of back pain, the teen was taken by ambulance to Portimão Hospital, where she was kept for observation.
A team of Maritime Police officers and INEM emergency medics were dispatched to the scene.
In July last year two tourists fell down the cliff that runs alongside the busy row of beachfront bars in the popular tourist resort of Praia da Rocha, in Portimão (Algarve), in the space of a month.
And over recent years a number of similar incidents have occurred in Praia da Rocha, many of them believed to have been caused by excessive drinking.
Speaking to Correio da Manhã last July, bar owner Salvador Varela, proprietor of the popular Outro Bar, warned tourists to take care in the area.
“People can’t drink and then go and play on top of the wall. They must be very careful”, he stressed.
At the time the newspaper claimed that authorities were to carry out an assessment of the area’s level of danger and then contact the local council with a view to establishing what measures should be applied to prevent accidents from happening, which could include protection nets. But it seems, visually at least, any type of preventative action has yet to be taken.
