The swim in the icy winter waters of the Atlantic is said to bring health for the coming year.
Among those who took on the waves was President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who went for a dip in Cascais Bay.
After emerging calmly from the sea, he took time to chat to reporters and tourists, before retreating to the warmth of his official residence.
