The final figure for January represents a decrease of 0.1 percentage points from the previous month, 0.5 percentage points less than three months earlier and 2.2 percentage points less than in the same month of 2017.
The youth unemployment rate (15-24 years old), in turn, stood at 22.1 percent in January, down from 23 percent in December, with the INE estimating this figure will remain unchanged in February.
The unemployment rate for adults increased by one tenth of a percentage point to 7.1 percent.
The unemployed population in January was estimated at 409,400 people, having decreased by 0.7 percent against the previous month (3,000 people fewer), while the employed population was estimated at 4,777,800 people, having increased by 0.1 percent (an additional 6,400 people) compared to the previous month.
